Controller Construction

Well, enough of the other boring details :) Now it's time to get to the nuts and bolts of the equipment required to make the display work. For the controller hardware, I chose to go with those manufactured by Light-O-Rama. They were the company Carson Williams used to create his spectacular display in Mason, Ohio. The main controller exists of four CTB-16D controllers, which feature a total of 16 individually controlled channels and a total controller capacity of 40 amps. Each controller is split into two groups of 8 channels each with the capability of two individual power feeds, a capability I take advantage of here. The controller assembly is based on a 2 foot square by 1/2 inch thick exterior grade plywood which has been treated for exterior use. The entire controller will then be mounted inside what is, essentially, a giant doghouse with a removable roof. This will weatherproof the entire controller as well as providing protection from tampering. Power feed will be via four 220 volt 30 amp four wire twist-lock plugs (which are visible on the shots showing the rear panel views). A set of four 10-3 with ground cables will then connect the panel to the four twist lock outlets located on the exterior of the house where the controller is to be located. These outlets will be of the waterproof variety with sealed caps.
